Two birds of the endangered Egyptian vulture hatched at the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre of Green Balkans this year!

...
Their parents are pairs kept in the aviaries of the Centre of Green Balkans, as part of the programme to support the species' fragile population in our country.

This year too, the hatching of the chicks happened with the help of the specialists from the Centre. Early during incubation, the eggs were safely placed in an incubator, and artificial eggs were put in their place so that the birds would not lose their instinct to incubate and raise offspring. This decision was made based on data from previous years, which showed a high mortality rate of the chicks at an early embryonic stage.

After the chicks hatched and became independent, they were returned to the nests to be further raised by their parents, thereby supporting their rewilding process.

Once the young birds grow up, they will be moved to a separate, bigger aviary, where they will spend the entire winter. Then, in the spring of 2027, they will be released via an adaptation aviary as part of our joint activities with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds to conserve the species.

The activity is funded by the City of Prague and Prague Zoo within the framework of the project "Protection of the Egyptian Vulture in the Balkans", and by project "Egyptian Vulture restocking and conservation in Bulgaria".
