As the new breeding season for the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) approaches, the team of the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center carried out an annual preventive check-up of all birds in the breeding program.
Prevention is a mandatory part of the preparation, with each bird undergoing a thorough veterinary examination, nail and beak trimming, as well as deworming. The activities are implemented under the project "Life for the Lesser Kestrel" LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017, funded by the EU LIFE Program, and this year, in addition to the Center's veterinary specialists, students from Trakia University, interns under the MES project "From Higher Education to Employment", actively participated in them.
In addition to veterinary procedures, the future specialists assisted with basic cleaning and disinfection of the aviaries and nesting boxes for the rare birds. We expect the breeding season of the Lesser kestrels to begin in March, when the birds become more active in choosing nests, and we hope to see the first eggs in April.
We remind you that for decades now, juvenile Lesser kestrels, hatched in the aviaries of the Rescue Center, have been part of the Green Balkans program for the return of this recently extinct species to the nature of Bulgaria.
