Lazarus Day in Mogila village: a celebration with a cause for the return of the Saker Falcon

Apr. 06, 2026

...
During the past festive weekend, the team from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre of Green Balkans, as part of LIFE for Falcons project, took part in the Lazarus Day (Lazarovden) celebration in the village of Mogila, Stara Zagora.

At the heart of the celebration, we engaged with the local community on important environmental protection topics and discussed how each of us can contribute to a cleaner environment. The main focus of our conversations was the return of the Saker Falcon to our country—we shared details with curious children and adults alike about our organisation's efforts to ensure its return and the survival of its fragile population in Bulgaria.

The village of Mogila is a very special place for us, as we are actively working on releasing the Saker Falcon back into nature within its territory (specifically the Bozduganovo Forest area). This is exactly where we release young birds, aiming to establish the foundation for a new stable population in Bulgaria.

The special ambassadors for the cause were Harry, Blaga, Mia, and Luli—birds with permanent disabilities who were given a second chance at the Rescue Centre. They allowed visitors to get an up-close look at the beauty of wildlife and learn about their personal stories.

We would also like to express our gratitude for the invaluable help of our volunteers from the "BARBATUS" Student Ecological Club at Trakia University, who worked tirelessly at our stand.
