On September 23, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Bulgaria, H.E. Alejandro Polanco, accompanied by his wife and part of his team, visited the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora and the vulture aviary in the “Sinite kamani” Nature Park.

His Excellency was welcomed in Stara Zagora by the Manager of the Green Balkans Rescue Center. All guests had the opportunity to meet one of the patients at the rescue Center- the Tawny Owl Chara, as well as other birds from the Bulgarian fauna. The Ambassador, accompanied by the Director of the “Ivan Pavlov” National Vocational School of Veterinary Medicine in Stara Zagora - Dr. Yabalkarov, got acquainted with the Center’s breeding program and the Black Vulture pair - Keyo and Cherna, that arrived from the Netherlands and Spain respectively. An interesting part of the visit was the injured Griffon Vulture operation, performed at the Center’s clinic .

At the “Sinite kamani” Nature Park, His Excellency was welcomed by the "Bright Future for the Black Vulture" LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project team and our partners from the "Sinite kamani" Nature Park. The mayor of Sliven, Mr. Radev, as well as representatives from the Regional Directorate of Forestry - Sliven, were also at the event, along with Mountain Rescue Service – Sliven and many citizens, including some of our donors. The guests got acquainted with the variety of species in the park, with special attention to vultures. We thanked Spain for preserving most of its biodiversity and now, as a reservoir of rare species, donating them to restoration programs across Europe.

The highlight of the visit was the release of a Griffon Vulture from the aviary in the park. The honor went to Z4 - a Griffon Vulture, found in distress and rescued in Spain in 2017, transported to Bulgaria and settled in the aviary in 2018. Before being released, Z4 got a name - Regina (from the Spanish "Reina" - meaning queen).

The Green Balkans team would like to thank H.E. Alejandro Polanco and his team for their visit, as well as for their interest in our work. We hope to continue to enjoy the support of the Kingdom of Spain for the return of vultures in Bulgaria!

We would also like to thank our hosts from the “Sinite kamani” Nature Park for their hospitality and for their help as co-organizers of the event.

We would like to thank all guests who joined the event.

Special thanks to the mayor of Sliven, Mr. Radev, as well as to all institutions that joined our event. We hope to successfully continue our work together and release many more vultures in the Bulgarian nature!
