What do bats do in the spring and what exactly is a transit bat colony?

Mar 26, 2019

***
During the weekend the Green Balkans Rescue Center team received a signal for a bat colony in an abandoned building of the ‘Zlaten klas’ agricultural cooperative in the village of Koilovtsi, Pleven province.

The property’s new owner, Tsvetoslav Petkov, had planned a renovation in the building and reached out to us to help him deal with his unexpected tenants. At the site, our team found out from the workers that there have been around 100 bats in the building only a few days ago. When they went to check, however, the Green Balkans team only found one bat, a Greater horseshoe bat.

This is a showcase example of the bats’ spring migration from their wintering places towards their breeding places. That is the reason these so called 'transit colonies' often take temporary shelter in old buildings, they often leave within a few days.

If you stumble upon such a colony, we’d recommend you wait a couple of days so they can leave the place on their own. In case you decide to turn to specialists for advice and help, you can contact the local RIEW inspectorate. For contacts, check out the MOEW website.

We would like to thank all responsible citizens for their positive attitude towards our wild neighbors in order to live in harmony together!
