We celebrated Wetlands Day at the dam Rozov Kladenets dam
04.03.2022Green Balkans together with the Ecology Department of Radnevo Municipality celebrated the World Wetlands Day by conducting monitoring of Waterfowl birds at Rozov Kladenets dam. The lesson was attended by students from the Ecology Club from the Second Primary School "St. Paisii Hilendarski" with class teacher Daniela Kireva.
The dam is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000. Among the birds observed were Cormorant and Pygmy Cormorant, Great Egret, Grey Heron, Green-winged Teal, and etc.
The children had a close and "live" look at the waterfowl inhabiting the natural area and learned about their adaptations for living in this environment.
Binoculars and spotting scopes were used for easier identification and identification. Life-size mock-ups of endangered birds that occur in Bulgaria's wetlands -- the Red-breasted Goose and the Pygmy Cormorant, helped to get a closer look at these species that are subject of protection in Bulgaria.
The young ecologists were told curious facts about the observed species, and the biggest surprise was the return to life of a cured bird - a small hawk. The treatment of such injured or distressed animals is carried out in the Wildlife Rescue Centre in Stara Zagora at Green Balkans. Those that after treatment are able to cope on their own in the wild are returned to it again.
The students welcomed very emotionally and with excitement the giving of this second chance to the cured animal, they felt the thrill of the bird's second flight to freedom.
More about the Ramsar Convention:
2022 marks the 51st anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention - the first international treaty on biodiversity conservation and 48 years since Bulgaria ratified this important document. Its official name is the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, in particular as a habitat for waterbirds. The aim is the conservation and wise use of wetlands as waterfowl habitat, taking them into account as an international resource. The Convention is currently signed by 158 countries, including Bulgaria. 1,721 sites are protected, covering an area of about 160 million hectares (1,600,000 km2). Our country participates with 11 Ramsar sites with a total area of 49912,43 ha.
