Vultures, majestic and unique creatures, an irreplaceable part of our wildlife, sanitarians, cleaners and preventers of disease, doing what no other animal can do! It is a little known fact that Bulgaria was once home to four vulture species – the Egyptian, Griffon, Black and Bearded vultures were a common part of our wildlife, but were brought to extinction due to the agricultural changes, reduction of pasture practices, the unlawful use of poisons and deliberate pursuit.

The Green Balkans team along with partners and supporters from the Fund for the Wild Flora and Fauna(FWFF), the Birds of Prey Protection Society (BPPS) and the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) have been working for their recovery for decades.

We are extremely happy and proud to share the successful completion of our Vultures Return in Bulgaria LIFE08 NAT/BG/278 project started in 2010 aiming the recovery of the Griffon Vulture in Stara Planina. The project started in October 2010 and was finished in June 2015 and has released over 200 Griffon Vultures from four adaptation aviaries in the Vrachanski Balkan, Central Balkan, Sliven and Kotel regions. To date, more than 70 Griffon Vultures are permanently seen in the regions of release along with various unmarked guests from other colonies. The last breeding season saw 12 breeding pairs nesting in three of the four release sites – Vrachanski Balkan, Sinite kamani and Kotel regions. Marked birds were also seen in the colonies in Eastern Rhodopes, as well in the Greece colony in Dadia National Park and Demir kapiya in Macedonia. 2015 welcomed the first chick hatched from birds released within the project – Mishel in the Vrachanski Balkan colony.

These successes gave us the strength and opportunity to start a new project, focused on the Black, as well as the Griffon Vulture – the Bright Future for the Black Vulture LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project, aiming to recover the Black Vulture in the Kresna Gorge and Eastern Stara Planina regions. It includes the release of 60 additional Griffon Vultures to support the existing Griffon Vulture colonies and support the recovery of the Black Vulture. The project partners the Green Balkans, the Fund for the Wild Flora and Fauna, the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF) and Euronatur foundation and the Spanish governmental body GOBEX.
