Two Egyptian vultures, one common kestrel and 46 tortoises from the Green Balkans Rescue Center found their second home in the Eastern Rhodopes!
16.05.2023A few days ago, in the presence of children from "Ivan Vazov" Primary School, Potochnica village, and "Vasil Levski" Secondary School, Krumovgrad town, in the area of the vulture feeding ground near Potochnica, a common kestrel and 46 tortoises, patients of the Rescue Centre of Green Balkans were released.
Later, the little conservationists watched with interest the tagging of two young Egyptian vultures. It took place in the delayed release aviary in the area, and the birds, in addition to being examined and dewormed by the Center's veterinarians, were also tagged with satellite transmitters by our colleagues from the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.
The two vultures were hatched last year, one in the wild of Bulgaria and the other in the Vienna Schonbrunn Zoo. And while one of them spent the winter in the Center for further breeding, as he was too young at the end of last summer and would not be able to withstand the long journey of migration, the other vulture was donated by Austria to the Bulgarian nature, for which we also thank Anton Vaidal - coordinator for Egyptian vultures in the EAZA system.
For now, the birds will remain in the aviary, and our colleagues from BSPB will take care of them. Once they get used to the place and get stronger, they will be released into the wild.
