Jan. 08, 2020

***
Today a necropsy of two Griffon vultures was performed at the Green Balkans' Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center within project “Bright future for the Black vulture”, LIFE14 NAT/BG/649.

The birds were admitted at the Center yesterday by the vets team along with Dr. Ivanka Lazarova, PhD student at Trakia university. Thus the activity of the Center supports the training of the veterinarians and their scientific work.

One of the vultures was found dead next to a power pylon in Kresna gorge by a field assistant of the Fund for wild flora and fauna. No gunshot pellets were revealed by the roentgenography, neither signs of shooting or electrocution. Bone sample was collected for lead poisoning analysis.

The other vulture was provided by our colleague from the Birds of prey protection society. It has been crashed by train on a railway in Vrachanski Balkan and is supposed to be one of the many victims of the mass poisoning of birds of prey which took place in Vrachanski Balkan region in September last year. Roentgenography was also made with no guhshut pellets discovered and poaching was excluded. Samples were collected from internal organs and bone for poisoning analysis.

Huge thanks to all the veterinarians and the field assistants for the immediate reaction!
