The falcons, two of which are a formed pair, were purchased as part of project “Saker Falcon Reintroduction in Bulgaria”. They were housed today in the Centre's aviaries.
The total count of our saker falcons is now 36. We have 12 formed pairs, 2 birds are "retired" from the breeding programme and welcome the guests of the Centre in our visitors' corner, and 10 are in the stock aviary as they are young individuals and have not yet reached reproductive maturity.
We remind you that for more than 12 years the Green Balkans team has been working for the return of the saker falcon to the nature of Bulgaria. Thanks to the efforts of our team which included captive breeding, the species returned to us after decades of no confirmed breeding in the wild.
The inclusion of new young birds in the breeding flock of the Centre will support our work greatly as we aim to release as many juvenile offsprings as possible into the wild.
The project “Saker Falcon Reintroduction in Bulgaria” is funded by the Mohamed Bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund and Armeec JSC.
