The hatching of Lesser Kestrel chicks at the Rescue Center and the Release Module in Sakar began

May 29, 2015

...
Ten Lesser Kestrel babies were already hatched at the Rescue Center, and two other chicks hatched in the Release Module.

All these chicks were hatched by parents bred in captivity, but once grown-up, they will be released into the wild. Thus, they will become part of the efforts made by the team of Green Balkans and the project “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 aimed at restoring the rare species as a breeder in the Sakar Mountain, part of the ecological network NATURA 2000. This is why our team is so happy – soon the newly hatched chicks will be free, and, hopefully, next year they will return and breed in the region of Sakar.

What is interesting here is the fact that the first two chicks hatched at the same time in the Release Module in Sakar and at the Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora – in the morning of May 22nd. Thanks to the video surveillance system established within the project, the experts recorded with precision the almost simultaneous hatching of the chicks in these two facilities. Another, even more curious fact is that this event coincided with the celebration of the NATURA 2000 Day at the Rescue Center. In general, the NATURA 2000 Day is celebrated on May 21st, but for some organizational reasons we decided to celebrate the NATURA 2000 Day at the Rescue Center on May 22nd. As if to bring more festivity and joy to the team, the first Lesser Kestrel chicks for 2015 hatched at this very moment.

The activities for the recovery of the Lesser Kestrel as a breeder in Bulgaria are implemented by Green Balkans within “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 with the support of the EU’s LIFE program.
