The first white storks for this year released from the Green Balkans Rescue Centre

03.03.2020
Our tireless volunteers have once again come to the aid of the Green Balkans Wildlife Centre.

This time, during the weekends, students from the Thracian University of Stara Zagora helped us clean the Centre's green areas from the branches and leaves pulled down by the wind. After we finished our physical work, we left for Belozem together, where we released 8 white storks and visited The White Stork Tourist Information Centre.

The released storks have been patients of the Center since 2019. They spent the whole winter waiting for new feathers or old wounds to heal.

And why did we choose Belozem?
Due to the largest colony of storks in Bulgaria - more than 40 couples in 2005, the village was included in the European Stork Villages Network, by the German EuroNatur Foundation. Since then, local communities - the mayoralty, the community center, and the Geo Milev Primary School have been taking care of the beautiful birds and their nests. An interesting fact is that more than 20 pairs of storks nest on the roof of the school in the village. The abundance of food in the area is sure proof that the new inhabitants of Belozem, the storks from the Rescue Center, will feel great there.

We thank our faithful volunteers for their help.
