The first bearded vulture hatched and started the baby season at the Green Balkans Rescue Center

07.02.2023
Yesterday, the first chick for 2023 from the breeding program of the Rescue Center of Green Balkans hatched.

For another year it was a bearded vulture!

The little one came into the world not without the assisted help of the Green Balkans team, after one, whole day, he couldn't get out of his shell!
Fortunately, the chick was fine, and apart from removing the shell and dousing the navel with tincture of iodine, no other manipulations were necessary.
The parents, for their part, accepted the chick quite normally, and a second after we left the nest, the mother went to him and began to warm him!
This behavior of the birds, of course, did not surprise anyone, as they are a family with great experience and this is already their eleventh chick hatched in the Green Balkans Rescue Center!

During our visit to the nest, the couple's second egg was taken to the Center's incubators. This is a normal procedure when there is more than one egg in the nest. It is done for the survival of both chicks, as the species is rare in Europe and extinct in Bulgaria, and each individual is very, very important!

So, good luck to our cuddly babies and … happy start to baby season at the Center!

We remind you that we, from Green Balkans, are part of a large-scale European program for the return of the bearded vulture to Europe, coordinated by our colleagues from the VCF. For now, the program works in different countries of the old continent, and we hope that it will soon work in our country too!
