The first Lesser Kestrels, that were hatched in the Wildlife Rescue Centre this year, took on a journey to freedom

Several days ago the first 11 young Lesser Kestrels, that were hatched in Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Centre, were transported to the Lesser Kestrel Release and Adaptation Module in Levka village in Sakar mountain.

There, identification rings were placed on them, and were placed in special boxes, where they will grow up. In the same time the young hawks will get to know their surroundings, and will accept it as their home.

This was the first of many such actions for freeing young Lesser Kestrel hatched in aviaries, as part of the “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project.

There are, on the other hand, “wild” pairs of Lesser Kestrels in the Module area, that also rear their offspring. The observation and imitation of the behavior of their wild fellow Lesser Kestrels and their parents will enable our young, and still inexperienced, birds from the aviaries to adapt considerably better to the wild.

Thus in Autumn all together will be ready for the long trip south, where they will spend the winter in wait for the warmer days.
