The fieldwork of project “Saker Falcon Reintroduction in Bulgaria” has ended!

16.10.2023
With the arrival of autumn, time came to prepare the field equipment and facilities of project “Saker Falcon Reintroduction in Bulgara” for winter.. This is why last week a team from Green Balkans visited all five adaptation aviaries.

The nesting material of leaves and branches was taken down, the metal parts of the cages were disinfected, the “lifts” for food provision and the ropes were stored away, the cameras were turned off and the equipment connected to them was prepared for winter as well.

So, we are now ready to face the upcoming cold days.

We’d like to remind you that this year 19 young Saker Falcons have fledged from the adaptation aviaries and with them the total number of falcons released by Green Balkans has become 160. Over 90% of them were hatched in the Centre’s aviaries in the framework of the project and the rest were either purchased or donated for the reintroduction of the species in Bulgaria.

Thanks to our teams’ efforts, since 2018 the species has returned as nesting in the nature of Bulgaria. This year we have confirmed two breeding pairs in the wild that successfully reared 6 fledglings.

The "Reintroduction of the Saker falcon in Bulgaria" project is funded by Mohamed Bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund and Armeec JSC.
