The breeding season of the Bearded Vultures in the Rescue Centre has begun

Jan. 11, 2016

Since yesterday the Bearded Vultures of the Wildlife Rescue Centre have started their first copulations for 2016!

Some time ago thing were not looking too hopeful as all their contacts were limited to fierce fighting and the aggressive female beating and plucking feathers from the poor male, who is also smaller in size. The team of the Rescue Centre was very seriously concerned up to a point of considering separating the pair and looking for a replacement, more dominant male.

Fortunately yesterday a miracle soomehow happened and we have observed the very first copulations!

Since then we are happy to say there have been plenty of news. This makes us very hopeful that we could soon discover the very first egg of Bearded Vultures at the Wildlife Rescue Centre. This has been one of the main goals of Green Balkans since the establishment of the organization in 1989 - to restore Bearded Vutures, which are the symbol of Bulgarian nature conservation.

We would like to remind you that we oserved the first copulations of the pair last year, after eight years together in the premises of WRBC. This happened after a visit of Dr. Alex Llopis of the Vulture Conservation Foundation, who consulted us on ptimizing the conditions for keeping the pair.
Currently, they are the only Bearded Vultures in Bulgaria and you can learn more about their history and what love means to vultures HERE.
