This year the pair of Red-footed Falcons inhabiting the aviary of the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre – Green Balkans has successfully hatched and reared one fledgling!
The chicken hatched in the beginning of June. It was reared under the warm care of its parents, birds with permanent traumas that can`t be released in the wildness.
After staying with its parents for three months the fledgling was released through one of the adaptational aviaries in the Centre.
This of course happened after a thorough-out examination from our veterinary surgeons and after being marked with an aluminium ring from the Bulgarian Ornithological Centre, which is compulsory for every bird released by the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre.
The Red-footed Falcon is the newest species breeding in the Centre. This is the second hatch of our brace after their first one with two fledglings from two years ago. The species is protected under the Law of biodiversity of the Republic of Bulgaria. It is a rare species in Bulgaria and Europe.
As you may already know one of the activities of the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre is to support the wild populations of endangered species by breeding in aviaries birds with permanent traumas and releasing their offsprings in the wild.
As of today, we have breaded more than 10 species including – Common Kestrel, Barn Owl, Little Owl, Lesser Kestrel, Saker Falcon, Eurasian Eagle-Owl, Egyptian Vulture…, and since quite recently – Red-footed Falcon!
