The Lesser Kestrels have already started laying eggs

Apr. 21, 2015

...
The first eggs in 2015 have already been laid at the Rescue Center and the Adaptation and Release Module in Sakar.

The most important phase of the Lesser Kestrel breeding season has just begun, as the first eggs have already been laid. Like in the previous year, the first parents to lay eggs were the birds of one of the adult pairs at Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora. These are among the first Lesser Kestrels involved in the program for restoration of the species as a breeder in the country. A couple of days ago they laid their first egg and today there are 3 eggs in their nest box.
A day later, the birds from another pair in the adaptation aviary in the village of Levka, Sakar SPA, started laying eggs and have 2 eggs already.
All these birds play a very important role in Green Balkans’ project “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360, since they are expected to provide juveniles to be released into the wild, as the role of the adults at the Release Module is of particular significance. The latter are expected to “communicate and keep contacts” with the juveniles to be released and to foster an instinct of site fidelity among the chicks.

The special video surveillance system enables the team to implement detailed monitoring and observation of birds, their behavior, and breeding sites. Through small cameras installed in the nest boxes, the experts receive real time information about the birds without causing direct disturbance.
The data from the video surveillance shows that the first 5 eggs in 2015 have already been laid, and reveals the fact that at least 7 pairs have been established at the Rescue Center, which are going to lay eggs and raise offspring.

Green Balkans’ team is facing another busy summer field season full of hope and expectations for more Lesser Kestrels in the wild of Bulgaria.
