The Egyptian vultures at Sofia Zoo will welcome winter in good health, dewormed and with trimmed beaks and claws
26.11.2021All this will happen thanks to the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center veterinarians team, who a few days ago visited the outpatient clinic of the zoo.
The main assistants in the initiative were representatives of the "Egyptian Vulture New LIFE" project team and students of veterinary medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Forestry, Sofia.
In addition to observers, the young people had the opportunity to be actively involved in some procedures, such as deworming and trimming of nails and beaks.
And, from the project team, the future veterinarians learned about the life and challenges to the survival of the Egyptian vultures in the wild, the method used to support the species population in our country and the role of the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center as a breeding ground and temporary accommodation of birds before their release into the wild.
Blood was taken from the birds during the manipulations, which will be sent for genetic analysis to a laboratory in Germany.
