The Egyptian Vultures and Imperial Eagles at the Rescue Centre are ready for the new breeding season of 2024

The Egyptian Vultures and Imperial Eagles were the last to undergo the annual prophylactic examinations of all birds residing in the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre of Green Balkans.

Their examinations took place in several consecutive days at the end of February, and our loyal helpers were once again students from Trakia University - Stara Zagora, volunteers of the Rescue Centre.

On the first day, we examined the four Imperial Eagles which are currently in the Centre - our resident pair and two young eagles, which were accepted last year and are to be released back into the wild.

Upon examination, we found they are in excellent health and we can begin preparations for the release of the young birds very soon. Following the check-up, the eagle pair was returned to their thoroughly cleaned and disinfected aviary, in which our team had prepared for them a new nest.

In the following days, it was turn for the ten Egyptian Vultures to undergo the veterinary check-up as well.

After the exam, four of the birds were paired and placed in their new cages with newly-built nests, ready for the upcoming breeding season. One remained alone in its cage, waiting for its future partner which will arrive from the Czech Republic very soon, and the rest of the vultures were returned back to the stock cage.

The prophylactic exam traditionally consisted of two teams.

One team was responsible for cleaning and disinfecting the cages, and repairing and preparing the nests. The second - consisting mainly of veterinary specialists and breeding experts, was conducting the examination of the birds by trimming overgrown beaks and talons, weight check, deworming against external and internal parasites, and was deciding on the allocation of the birds and formation of pairs.

The rearing of the Egyptian Vultures in the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre of Green Balkans is conducted with the financial support of the Municipality of Prague and Prague Zoo as part of project “Protection of the Egyptian vulture in the Balkans”.
