The Egg of the Pair of Griffon Vultures from Stara Zagora Zoo is Now in an Incubator at the Wildlife Rescue Center
29.03.2022In the Zoo in Stara Zagora, the first egg was laid by a pair of Griffon Vultures. The egg was placed in an incubator at the Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Center. The reason for this is to ensure the best possible conditions for the hatching of a vulture, since the birds nest directly on the ground and there is a chance that the egg will be broken.
The prospective parents are given an artificial egg so that when the youngling is returned for rearing, they are ready to accept it.. The zoo in Stara Zagora has a pair of Griffon Vultures, which in recent weeks have been observed to exhibit breeding behavior - actively building a nest and copulating, according to which there is a high chance that the egg will be fertilized.
Both birds from the pair were imported to Bulgaria from Spain in 2015 under the “Return of the vultures to Bulgaria” project LIFE08 NAT/BG/278 and were released into the wild in order to increase the population of the species. After suffering accidents and remaining disabled, they were donated to the Zoo in Stara Zagora by the Green Balkans’ team for aviary breeding.
