The Black vulutre pair in the Rescue center is in the beginning of the breeding season

24.01.2020
There is one breeding pair of Black vultures in the Green Balkans' Wildlife rehabiliotation and breeding center. Their mission is to support the program for reintroduction of the species in Bulgaria within project “Bright future for the Black vulture”, LIFE14 NAT/BG/649.

The birds are seen courting quiet often for the last few weeks and they spend more and more time together, they roost close to eachother in the nest and eat togather. The male is also busy building nest, using the sticks and brunches we provide in the cage.

The pair surely is in the phase of courting and we decided to help them by decorating the nest for them. In the wild, the black vulutres set up their nests on pine trees using brunches, grass, moss and pine bark as material. We tried to keep up to their preferences and we will continue giving sticks for the next few weeks.

This is the second breeding period of the pair and last year their pair bond was excellent and the famale laid one egg unfortunately infertile. We hope that after a year of living together the vultures are ready to become parents.
