The initial data about the alleged location of a new colony of Lesser Kestrels (Falco naumanni) was received by Green Balkans in a very curious way. On June 23rd, 2014, thanks to conscientious and concerned people, an extremely rare patient - a male Lesser Kestrel in distress, was received at Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Center! This unusual for Bulgaria patient stirred great excitement among the staff of the Rescue Center considering the fact that currently the only confirmed breeding of Lesser Kestrels in Bulgaria is recorded in Sakar and this breeding is a result of “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project activities implemented by Green Balkans.
Obviously, the newly admitted patient of the Rescue Center does not belong to the colony of the species established by Green Balkans within the project funded by the LIFE program of the European Union. This bird does not have any ornithological rings that are usually put on all birds released under the project. These surprising facts necessitate field observations of the region, where the strange patient was found. Thanks to Konstantin Popov - a longtime supporter of Green Balkans, it was found out that at least two Lesser Kestrel pairs breed in that region.

Since these observations were made during a period when breeding Lesser Kestrels have already left their nests and are not so attached to their nesting site anymore, it is impossible to confirm the exact number of individuals breeding in the area. Also, the area is difficult to access, which makes the implementation of more detailed studies even harder. However, these observations made in the region of Bourgas are almost a sensation. Given the currently available data on the distribution of the Lesser Kestrels in the country, showing a single breeding locality, which was established this year, these data provide completely new information on the status of the species in the country.

Detailed surveys are to be implemented in this region to identify the size of the colony and the territories it has occupied.
