Today, the future vet technicians from the 8th and 9th grades of the ‘Ivan Pavlov’ vocational veterinary school visited the Green Balkans Rescue Center in Stara Zagora. Since this is their first year in high-school we were more than happy to tell them more about the work here. The kids were very enthusiastic and happy to see the patients at the Rescue Center as well as the participant in the breeding programs and showed great interest in our voluntary programs.
We told them more about the Center and gave a presentation on rare and endangered species, biodiversity and ecological issues. The kids were interested to see how birds behaved during their breeding season and we showed them some real-time footage from our video surveillance system with which we can keep an eye on some of the species at the Rescue Center, including black and bearded vultures, saker falcons, lesser kestrels and others. After that we showed them our stationary patients and told them more about the stories that have brought those birds to the Center and why we cannot release them into the wild.
During the years the Green Balkans Rescue center team has always welcomed students from the ‘Ivan Pavlov’ vocational school who have also often helped us as volunteers at the Center. This has always been a good way to show children some practical knowledge into the field and to arouse their interest in wildlife protection and preservation. We hope they have a good and interesting time at the Rescue center while learning new and exciting things with us.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Vultures
There are four species of vultures in Europe - Griffon, Black, Egyptian and Bearded Vulture. All of them are strictly protected by Bulgarian and European legislation. As rare and valuable species, they fall under the protection of the European ecological network Natura 2000. Bulgaria is home to only three of them – the Griffon, Black and Egyptian Vulture. The Bearded Vulture - a symbol of Bulgarian nature protection is considered extinct from the country.
Lesser Kestrel
The Lesser Kestrel – once extinct as a nesting species in the country and successfully restored 25 years later, thanks to the Green Balkans activities in the Sakar Mountains. The species and its habitats are preserved in the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Saker Falcon
The Saker Falcon is a globally endangered species listed as critically endangered in Bulgaria. Although it was widespread in the past, in 2018 the first active nest of the species for the last 10 years was reported. The species and its habitats are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
The Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center information activities are implemented within the ‘NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria - NEW HORIZONS’ - LIFE17 GIE/BG/000371 project
