Stork troubles...

In recent days, the Rescue Centre of the Green Balkans team has responded to several signals for nesting Storks.

At one of the signals, we came across a young pair of Storks building their nest on the arrow of a crane in ‘TPP Maritsa East 2’ EAD. Concerned workers encountered an unusual sight after returning to work after the Easter holidays. Often young pairs choose unsuitable places to build their nests. After seeing that they did not have eggs, we removed the still unfinished nest - a pile of twigs and leaves. The timely intervention of our team will allow the birds to build a new nest in a suitable place this season and to raise healthy hatchlings, without the danger of falling from the unstable crane.

Another signal sent us in the village of Dabovo, Maglizh municipality. To our great regret, it was a fallen stork's nest. According to the people from the village, the nest was over 40 years old. A storm destroyed the nearly 500-kilogram nest and landed most of it on the ground. The team was not surprised by the contents of the nest. Every stork's nest itself resembles a small ecosystem that maintains constant humidity and temperature in depth. A nest can reach an incredible weight of over 1 ton and a width of 2-3 meters. Some of the nests contain a 60-80 cm thick layer of rotting plant materials, various larvae of invertebrates, soil, as well as a variety of household materials surrounded by twigs, keeping the impressive composition intact. Unfortunately, we also found several broken eggs in the remains of the nest.

We hope that the couple will return with new strength to build a new nest and continue to lay and raise their hatchlings there for at least another 40 years.
