Red-footed falcons breed at the Rescue Center of Green Balkans!

Jun 30, 2022

We have great news! Yesterday, the first chick of the pair of Red-footed falcons, inhabiting the Rescue Center of Green Balkans, hatched!

The birds have been together since 2020 and so far they have had one breeding attempt that was unsuccessful!
This year, our team observed multiple copulations, after which the female laid 3 eggs. Two of them have already turned into little fluffy chicks. We strongly hope this will happen with the last, third egg as well.

In this case, the reason for pride on the part of our team is that, for the first time, we succeeded in breeding this species in aviary conditions, not only in the Center, but also in Bulgaria.

The species is critically endangered and protected by the law on biological diversity in our country. It is included in the IUSN Red List as "vulnerable".

So, after Bearded vultures, Lesser kestrels, Saker falcons, Kestrels, Cuckoos, Hooded owls, Owls, Griffon vultures, White storks, and Egyptian vultures, we can add to the Rescue Center’s breeding species list  the Red-footed falcons.

The reproduction programes of the Center are an important part of the efforts of our team and partners to preserve the wild nature and rich diversity of Bulgaria. It is also the basis of our work on returning or supporting the populations of extinct or rare species in our country.
