Prophylactic medical examinations of Lesser kestrels at the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre

23.10.2019
Yesterday, the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre team, with the help of faithful volunteers, performed prophylactic medical examinations of Lesser kestrels that are part of our breeding program.

Forty-seven birds of the smallest species of falcon in Bulgaria - Lesser kestrel, were examined. Since the veterinarians did not find any health problems, only the necessary beak trimming, nail cutting and internal and external disinfection were performed.

We used the time when the birds were out of the cage to clean, wash, repair and disinfect their homes. After the doctors had finished their job, the birds were returned to the cage and were well fed as a reward for the disturbance.

The breeding flock of Lesser kestrels was formed within the project “Greater Chance for Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) in Bulgaria - Lesser Kestrel Recovery”, LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 that was successfully completed back in 2017.

The information activities for Lesser kestrel are carried out with the assistance of the project:
