Prophylactic check-up at the Rescue Center or “How the Lesser Kestrels spend the autumn days”

05.11.2015
Last month we carried out the traditional seasonal prophylactic check-up of the Lesser Kestrels bred at Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Center. Having reared their chicks that were released into the wild to support the already established Lesser Kestrel colony in the village of Levka, the birds devoted themselves to well-deserved health and comfort. They were all carefully examined, treated against parasites, and their beaks and talons were trimmed and filed as if in a professional beauty center. While the veterinarians were examining the kestrels’ physical condition and pedicure, other members of the project staff and volunteers cleaned perfectly the aviaries and made some minor improvements to the interior. Now, the birds are back in the facilities busy with their favorite activities: enjoying their food, relaxing, chatting with their neighbors, and sometimes even fighting for another portion of food or a sunlit perching place. The nest boxes are ready to accommodate our feathery fellows in the cold winter days, and the installed video surveillance equipment will reveal lots of details and peculiarities of their life and relations. In spring, when the birds establish pairs and hatch their Lesser Kestrel babies, we will know how well our job was done.
The Lesser Kestrel breeding stock at the Rescue Center is bred within “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” project implemented with the support of the LIFE program of the European Union.
