Poisoned birds in the outskirts of Stara Zagora

24.10.2009

A Rescue Center team immediately visited the place where 23 dead birds of the following species: Jackdaw (Corvus monedula), Rook (Corvus frugilegus) and Corn bunting (Miliaria calandra) were gathered. In addition to the bird carcasses, pinkish wheat seeds, apparently dispersed the same day, were collected from the field.
The forthcoming autopsy and toxicological analysis of the bird carcasses and the seeds are to prove the presence of pesticides.

The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters – Stara Zagora and the Regional Veterinary Medicince Service were informed of the case since the Corn bunting is listed in Annex 3 of the Biological Diversity Act including protected species.
In addition to the direct effect of the poisoning of these birds, the problem could be exacerbated by predatory animals, dogs or other domestic animals eating or carrying the carcasses away. We will inform you of the case’s further development.
