On June 15th the vulture restoration programme and the Bright Future for Black Vulture LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 Project received a young Griffon Vulture from Zoo Zlin. This is the fifth bird, hatched and raised by vultures kept at the zoo.
Thus, for the past month the project has received 4 Griffon Vultures donated this month, counting the three young birds granted by Barcelona Zoo on June 1st.

The vulture were welcomed at Sofia Airport by the team of the Green Balkans and were then transported to Green Balkans' Rescue Centre in Stara Zagora. It will stay there for a while and after that it will be transported to adaptation aviary above Sliven in order to get used to the area and will then be released into the wild.

Such donations have already been done by Zoo Zlin, Praha Zoo, Ostrava Zoo (the Czech Republic), Wilhlema Zoo, Zoo Munster, Allwetterzoo (Germany), DierenPark Amersfoort, Burger’s Zoo, Direnrijk (Netherlands), Jerez Zoo (Spain), Zoo de Doue, Saine-Croix Parc Animalier (France).

The captive bred birds, following a period of adaptation, are completely able to live into the wild. They can form pairs with other vultures, released within the restoration programme or native individuals and can play a key role for the restoration of their species in the Balkan Mountains and Kresna Gorge. The restoration of Griffon Vulture is a critical step towards the restoration of the other species of large vultures, such as Black and Bearded.

The teams of Green Balkans, FWFF and the Birds of Prey Protection Society has been working for years for the success of the programme and is likely to continue the efforts for decades to come!We would like to once again cordially thank the Zoo Zlin team for their trust and kind cooperation!
