On April 3rd this year, a Green Balkans Rescue Centre team examined and prepared six Lesser Kestrels for the journey of their lives.
They were greeted with open arms by the Sofia Zoo team. There, the three Lesser Kestrels pairs found their forever home.
Under the gentle care of our friends from the zoo, they will have the opportunity to have and raise their own hatchlings. Meanwhile, the Lesser Kestrels will help children and visitors to learn why it is important to keep their species in our nature.
When the hatchlings are grown they will be returned to their parents' birthplace to help conserve the species in Bulgaria. We remind you that the birds are part of the 'Greater chance for Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) in Bulgaria - Lesser Kestrel Recovery, LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project, implemented with the support of the European Commission and completed successfully in 2017.
Since then, the activities have continued with the release of young birds near the Green Balkans Rescue Centre, or in the release and adaptation module for Lesser Kestrels in the village of Levka in Sakar (part of the European Ecological Network Natura 2000).
