Monitoring of Black Vultures in the “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park with trainees and volunteers from the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center

Beside work in the clinic, it is important for us that our volunteers and trainees are also familiar with the field work.

Which is why last week we helped the Green Balkans field team with the supplementary feeding of the vultures’ colony near Dolno Ozirovo village and we monitored birds in the region as well as Griffon Vultures, Black Vultures and White-tailed Eagles.

In addition, we held meetings with local livestock breeders and informed them about the opportunity to donate their dead animals for food for the vultures at the feeding site. This practice is one of the most important activities of the “Bright Future for Black Vulture” LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project and benefits both vultures and livestock breeders. On the one hand breeders take advantage of the free and natural carcass disposal service provided by vultures, and on the other hand the project team provides vultures with food gratuitously left from the livestock breeders.

Future veterinarians should be acquainted with this process, which must be carried out under the supervision and with the permission of a veterinarian.
