Intensive reconstruction activities underway at Green Balkans’ Wildlife Rescue Centre

12.09.2014
As the busy breeding season has just finished, the Wildlife Rescue Center run by Green Balkans launched a large-scale activity for the reconstruction of the aviaries for breeding of Lesser Kestrels and Bearded Vultures.

The team is actively using the nonbreeding period of the birds, when they can be placed in other temporary aviaries. Numerous improvements to the aviaries of Griffon Vultures, Lesser Kestrels, and Bearded Vultures are carried out within two projects implemented by Green Balkans, supported by the EU's LIFE Program - "Lesser Kestrel Recovery" LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 and "Vultures' Return in Bulgaria" LIFE08 NAT/BG/278, aimed at restoring the breeding of rare birds that have gone extinct in Bulgaria.

The reconstruction of the Bearded Vultures’ aviary is a result of the visit of Alex Llopis - a renowned expert in captive breeding of these majestic birds, who gave us invaluable advice on how to secure coziness and non-disturbance for our pair. Intense repair works are underway because the vultures’ breeding season starts much earlier than that of other bird species - they start courting in the winter, and in order to demonstrate interest in one another, the birds need to feel calm at home already in November.

Therefore, experts from the Center, volunteers of Green Balkans, carpenters, welders, and other workers are working hard to prepare more comfortable homes for these endangered birds to be used in the next breeding season. The purpose of all repair works is to provide better conditions, so that the breeding pairs can raise more chicks, which will be then released into the wild as part of Green Balkans’ programs supporting the wild populations of these birds.

Of course, the daily activities and caretaking of patients of the Centre continue. Preparation of food, cleaning of aviaries, examinations and manipulations are only few of the tasks implemented by the team.
