The two Egyptian vultures, released this summer in the Eastern Rhodopes by the artificial nest method started their migration in the beginning of September. One of them – Anna performed a dangerous move she, flied twice above the sea near Adrasan peninsular, but fortunately returned on the land as currently she is in Adana province. The other bird named Vanya made a dangerous flight when she was in Madzharovo, she landed on a roof of a house. The team of the project managed to capture the bird and to return it on the rocks.

After that Vanya headed southward to Greece, where she continued to perform unusual behavior for a wild bird, flying closer to urban areas and landing in them. After a short discussion among the experts of the project, a decision was made to capture the bird and keep it in the Green Balkans’ Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center, where she is currently.

After an examination made by the specialists, it was determined that Vanya’s weight is good, but full she is of parasites. Her behavior is disturbing – the bird shows no fear of people.

The two birds were equipped with satellite transmitter and put to an adaptation aviary (hack) on 10th August. The experimental method – hacking – adaptation of birds to the wilderness, hatched in captivity in an artificial nest, aiming for recovery of the wild population of the worldwide endangered Egyptian vulture on the Balkans.

This activity is performed by the team of BSPB and Green Balkans within the LIFE project “Egyptian vulture New LIFE”, which unites institutions and organizations from 14 countries from the Balkan peninsular, the Near East and Africa. The two juvenile vultures were donated within the project the with the cooperation of Anton Vaidl – coordinator of the breeding program of the species within the European Associations of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and thanks to the close cooperation with the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF).
