For those of you, who cannot keep track of our work all the time, we would like to remind that earlier this summer the nest, where the young eagle was hatched and also his mother, fell victim to the devastating storms. Luckily, the eaglet survived and was saved by the team of Green Balkans. After a two-month stay at the Wildlife Rescue Centre, Bogomil, that is the name we gave the rescued eaglet, was placed in a nest of a foster pair of Imperial eagles, in the Sakar mountain. There, the eaglet was successfully adopted by its new family and raised with the other chick, hatched in that nest. Every day a volunteer of BSPB monitored the development of the two young birds and the care the two adult eagles provided them with. Thanks to these observations we found that the first to leave the nest was the eaglet that was hatched there. That is logical, because it was larger and more developed than its stepbrother - Bogomil. After a couple of days it was time for Bogomil to conquer the skies. On the 22nd of July the young, inexperienced bird made its first attempt at flying. Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful and the young one fell on a branch under the nest. Due to the quick reaction of the volunteer guarding the nest, the eaglet was saved and taken to a safe place. The very next day the team of Green Balkans, old acquaintances of the Imperial eagle chick, arrived at the site. According to the initial examination carried out. the environmentalists reckoned that the eaglet was well and fortunately had not suffered any damage. After a brief discussion a decision was made: Bogomil would have another chance, he was returned to the nest of his stepparents. Still, an additional amount of food was placed in the nest, to support the birds in those critical moments. ”This is the eaglet saved the most this year!“, commented a representative of Green Balkans, who got involved in the fate of the eaglet from its initial rescue from the “nest of hatching”, its placing with the adoptive parents and its subsequent returning to its new home. The happy news are that only a couple of days later, Bogomil, with new strength, confidence and lessons learned from his first unsuccessful attempt at flying, was able to fly off from the nest without any difficulty. The subsequent observations of BSPB indicate that the young bird has good coordination and is ready start his independent life in the wild. Alongside the actions for the saving of Bogomil at Sakar mountain, the team of Green Balkans keeps track of other adolescent Imperial eagles that have left their nests. It is expected that soon all young eagles in the area would make their first flight.
The actions of Green Balkans on the research and protection of the Imperial eagle are carried out with the support of the EuroNatur foundation
