White storks, rehabilitated and raised in the Green Balkans’ Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center were released for the fourth time this season. Our colleagues from Bulgarka Nautre Park attended the event, as well as our friends – nature lovers.
The released birds up to now are about one hundred, after the release of 21 storks today. They were all rescued by people who contacted the Rescue center for help. Some of the birds were with fractures, dislocated joint or just chicks pushed out of the nests by their stronger siblings. We examined 29 storks but 8 of them were not ready yet to be released and they will remain in the center until their condition gets well enough. The white storks have already started their migration and we want to make sure that they have the strength to cope up with the challenge to reach the distant wintering sites, which will provide them good conditions.
We equipped all the storks we released with metal rings for identification to be able to identify them in case they return to Bulgaria. We also provided food for them, to give them power in their first attempts to fly and hunt
