First ringing of juvenile Lesser kestrels in the Wildlife rehabilitation and beeding center

Jun 11, 2019

***
The Lesser Kestrels hatched this year were ringed and accommodated in an adaptation aviary. This is the last stage before their release in the wild.

54 Lesser Kestrels were hatched in the Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center in the nest boxes of 14 pairs. Today we marked 47 of them with ornithological rings in order to identify them in case we spot them after the release.

20 of the juvenile birds have already started to feed on their own and at this is the moment when we will separate them from their parents and put them in the hack – the adaptation aviary from which the oldest ones will be released after 10 days. The rest of the birds were returned to their parents, waiting to grow enough to be released. We made last medical examination of the Lesser Kestrels and disinfested them to make sure they will leave the Center in good health.

All the juvenile Lesser Kestrels, hatched in the Green Balkans’ Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center this year will only be released from the adaptation aviary of the Center in order to boost the local colony of the species and 12 of the birds will remain as part of the breeding program, which we breed in captivity. The ringing of the juvenile Kestrels coincided with visit of students from Primary school “Hristo Smirnenski”, the town of Stamboliisky, who gave names to the juvenile birds: Michelle, Rosa, Melinda, Zotsi, Mira, Mika, Koko, Poko, Chochko, Orlio, Pilcho, Zorko.
