On 19th of May, 2022, the conservation community lost a very valuable and dedicated ally.
One of the most active and heartfelt rangers in the Central Balkan National Park - Venelin Koychev - has left us. The man who literally lived with the idea of protecting the environment. He was the man who reduced the formally normal poaching habbit - to almost zero in the Tazhan section of the Central Balkans.
Venko took an active part in all mid-winter waterfowl bird count and a number of conservation actions of most NGOs in Bulgaria. Here in the Green Balkans, he was an invaluable helper in the restoration of vultures, falcons and the rescue of various individuals of protected species in the Kazanlak region.
Without him, the Golden eagle population will not be so well monitored and protected. His knowledge of dendrology was impressive and helped to discover new species in the park. With his intransigence, principlas and dedication. Central Balkans has lost one of its most loyal masters.
May he rest in peace and condolences to the relatives!
