The Vulture was found in the region of Listetz village, near Silistra, a local shepherd and a forestry employee helped us transport the bird. Firs aid was given by Haralanov M.D. who has been volunteering in Green Balkans for years. Then the bird was transported to the Rescue Center in Stara Zagora.
It turned out that the bird was a female, an old friend of the environmentalist circle, marked in 2008 in its nest by colleagues form the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.
Eight months after being treated in the Rescue Center, the young bird was released in the Eastern Rodopa mountains.
And now, two years later we met again, only this time fortunately through the camera lens. We were able to recognize it thanks to the ring mark on its foot. The bird has formed a couple with a recently widowed, elderly male. We received the news about the couple from our colleagues in BSPB. By sheer chance or not she has chosen to come back in the Northern parts of Bulgaria. Unfortunately so far the attempts of the young couple to reproduce have not been successful. Still hearing that the bird is live and breeding after being treated is a huge success especially talking about Egyptian Vultures, birds so rare that every individual is crucial for the survival of the species.
