Immediately, the volunteers of our organization, who also watch and care for the nests of the Imperial Eagles in Sakar, began a search for the lost eagle. A little bit later, the bird was found near the nest, where it probably breeds. The location of the bird confirmed our suggestion that it was among the birds breeding in Sakar. When the team arrived, the bird was found very weak and exhausted.
Due to the condition of the bird, it had to be transported to the Wildlife Rescue Centre of Green Balkans, of course, after receiving an approval from RIEW – Haskovo. In the specialized clinic the vets took care for the eagle. The thorough medical examination did not reveal the cause of the condition of the bird, but reaffirmed the initial conclusions for exhaustion, strong dehydration and weight, that is lower than the normal weight for adult birds. The assumptions of the experts for the underlying causes are: high quantity of internal and external parasites, a virus or intoxication from different chemical substances.
In spite of the questions concerning this case, the expectations of the vets from the Rescue Centre are that the bird will manage to recover and be sent back to nature, after some period of rehabilitation and treatment. This is one of the few cases of saving an adult bird of this rare species. Normally, young and inexperienced ones tend to be more vulnerable. They are the usual patients of the Rescue Centre of Green Balkans.
After the observations, taken by the team of Green Balkans, in the area of the nest of the rescued eagle - we discovered that the other adult bird from this territorial pair is there too and continues to take care of its chick. Having in mind the age of the chick – over 70 days – it is expected that it will fledge very soon. The hopes of our team are that the other adult bird, although left alone, will manage to take care of its offspring and teach it hunting and survival in the wild nature.
On the other hand, we have good hopes that the rescued adult will soon recover and be able to go back and share the cares for its little one!
The efforts of Green Balkans for studying and rescuing Eastern Imperial Eagles are implemented through the kind support of EuroNatur.
