An extraordinary meeting
29.03.2023
Captive breeding of Egyptian vultures is almost a magical process. And our colleagues from the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center, in addition to knowledge, carry within themselves exactly this magic that is needed so that the little hatchlings can turn into beautiful young Egyptian vultures ready to be released in the wild.
For the whole team to monitor via the transmitters the life of these Egyptian vultures after their release is the only option to know that everything is OK with them. None of us has ever imagined that, while walking in the wild, accidentally can see an Egyptian vulture that we know from an egg, fly above our heads. No one dares to dream of such a meeting, yet they happen!
Our colleagues Ivaylo Klisurov and Nikolay Kolev from the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora experienced exactly such a meeting! While walking in the field, they observed Zara - one of the Egyptian vultures hatched and raised in the centre and released by a Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds team in 2020 in the Eastern Rhodopes as part of the Restocking programme of the species.!
Admiration, pride, pure love and a huge hope that all the efforts are worth it when years from now, you see that glittering silhouette in the sky!
You can follow Zara’s track here!
