In the last weeks, the Green Balkans team of "Life for Falcons" project made several observations of a young Saker Falcon.

After careful reading of the photo and video material, we found that the bird was released last year as part of our species recovery activities in the country. It was hatched in the Czech Republic on April 29, 2023, and was gifted to be released in Bulgaria by our friend and colleague Luboš Vanek.

The birds' measurements, taken during the veterinary examination prior to its release into the wild, showed that it was male and the falcon was named Apostol. It was released on June 12th, 2023, and it stayed exactly 40 days in the area of the hacks (adaptation aviaries) before dispersing.

The first observation after the bird left its release site was made by a volunteer of ours on January 31st this year. From then until now, the young falcon inhabits the same territory, feeding on voles.

This is the third falcon released during the 2023 field season that our team has observed this winter.

The project "Saker Falcon Reintroduction in Bulgaria" is funded by the Mohamed Bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund.

The activities for the restoration of the Saker Falcon in Bulgaria are funded by Armeec JSC.
The activities of "Life for Falcons" project are financed by the LIFE programme of the EU.
