A thousand patients at the Wildlife Rescue Center

More than 90% of all 1,031 patients received this year belonged to protected species. Eagles, falcons, storks, pelicans, hedgehogs, and tortoises represent only a small part of the wild animals treated at the Rescue Center. In addition, the Center also harbored Griffon Vultures – “immigrants” from Spain. Then, these birds were put in four acclimatization aviaries in the Balkan Mountains to restore the species in this region. Many “baby” animals found shelter at the Rescue Center, where they were raised and subsequently released into the wild. There were other babies – the chicks of the Eagle Owls, the Kestrels, and the White Storks, that were hatched at the Rescue Center - “Made in WRBC”. Having grown up under the loving care of their parents, assisted by the rehabilitation team, they were released in the wild, too.
Being Bulgaria’s only facility of this kind, the Rescue Center receives patients from all over the country. Thus, in one day we can receive a Little Owl from Shumen, a Heron from Vidin, and a White Stork from Haskovo, and a whole army of volunteers helps us secure the safe transportation of the patients.
An increasing number of wild animals in distress are received to be treated at the Rescue Center every year. In our opinion, this trend is a result of the growing popularity of the Center. More and more people learn about our work, hence more wild birds in distress could have a second chance.
