A new Black Vulture at the Wildlife Rescue Centre

The bird hatched in the wild, yet ended up in the zoo after losing a part of its wing in an accident in the wilderness. Despite that, our colleagues from Biopark Zoo de Doue la Fontaine decided that the vulture deserved a chance to have a family and sent the bird to the Wildlife Rescue Centre at Green Balkans - Stara Zagora. The transport was completed by our colleagues from the Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna and we are very grateful for that!

There are currently two female Black Vultures at the Rescue Centre - one from Northern Greece and another one from Spain. The two ladies are separated as the Greek one arrived as a baby with a serious foot problem and is much more used to people, due to the constant need of treatment and rehabilitation.

The newly arrived gentleman will be accommodated with the Spanish lady, hoping that one day the two vultures would like each other and the team of the Vultures Return in Bulgaria LIFE08 NAT/BG/278 project would eventually happily announce a baby vulture. One of the main goals of the five-year project, funded by the European Commission, is to prepare the conditions and assist the return of the species, already considered extinct from Bulgaria.

We are extremely grateful to all our colleagues for their trust and support and we are going to do our best to deliver the best possible conditions for our prospective pair.
