Our story begins few days ago when the “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” project LIFE11 NAT/BG/360, found a deceased female Lesser Kestrel in the Lesser Kestrel Adaptation and Release Module area in Levka village,Sakar mountain.
Thanks to the constant monitoring, carried out by the project team, we determined with no delay which female and where is her nesting box in the colony. We were convinced that the bird had eggs, and it was confirmed after examining the nest. In spite of our fears, that the five eggs were left for a long time without their mothers’ heat, we decided to give them a second chance.
Two of them were placed in another nest in the colony, and three were sent to the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre in an incubator. And the … we waited.
And then the miracle happened. This morning a hatched Lesser Kestrel greeted us…
Luckily the young is healthy, strong, and full of life. Our team begun feeding it. And, if everything goes according to plan, soon the chick will be given to foster parents in the aviary in the Wildlife Centre.
On the other hand, we know, from certain sources, that tomorrow, or the day after, from the two eggs we gave to the foster parents in Levka, Lesser Kestrel babies will hatch.
And the world is full of wonders! Keep believing in them!
