55 tortoises and one turtle arrived today in the Rescue Centre of Green Balkans
29.03.2023
Today, 55 Hermann's tortoises and one European pond turtle were accommodated in the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre of Green Balkans.
Yesterday, they were picked up by the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Vratsa from a private home following a tip-off.
After their placement with us, the Centre's veterinary physicians performed a thorough examination. It showed that the animals were extremely exhausted and dehydrated, their shells were permanently deformed, their claws were overgrown, and most had long beak-like formations on their upper jaws.
Overall, the general condition of all 56 animals is very poor. As per the recommendation of our colleagues from the Gea Chelonia Foundation, each of the tortoises was placed in a bath with a little warm water for 15-20 minutes. We will repeat this procedure aimed at rehydrating the animals for several more days until it is time to redirect them to the village of Banya, Obzor, where the Gea Chelonia team will provide more specialised care for them.
In the meantime, we treated our guests, which turned out to be all female, with lettuce and cucumbers.
We remind you that tortoises and turtles are protected under the Biodiversity Act of Bulgaria and any harm done to them, including keeping them in private homes, is punishable!
