This is a European environmental and media project, supported by the Presidents of Bulgaria, Germany, Croatia, Romania and the former President of Hungary. It provides for the establishment of bilateral partnerships between 20 German schools and 20 schools from Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Hungary, working together in topics related to nature conservation, Europe and Media.
As genuine journalists, the students investigate particular nature conservation issues in the country of the hosting school. Each project group then writes a one-page article on their mother language and gets it published in a local newspaper. This way the students improve their environmental awareness and develop their sensitivity to environmental issues. Several major European newspapers are project partners, among those are Trud (Bulgaria) and Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, Mittelbayerische Zeitung, Frankfurter Neue Presse (Germany).
The young nature-lovers visited the Wildlife Rescue Centre at Green Balkans – Stara Zagora as a first step for the vultures towards their freedom – quarantine. Here the students saw wing-tags, rings and transmitters used for identifying the vultures. The young journalists also got introduced to the permanent inhabitants of the Centre – birds which suffered from human cruelty and carelessness. The Centre team also presented our environmental solar system for hot water all-year-round.
After that the journalist trainees visited the Griffon Vulture adaptation aviary in the Sinite kamani Nature Park. Here, outside the aviary they were greeted by two already released vultures, while 10 more vultures are still awaiting freedom. Among those is a German vulture donated by Allwetterzoo Munster.
We hope that our guests enjoyed their visit! We are looking forward to their articles!
The project is funded by initiated by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, which is co-financing also the Vultures Return in Bulgaria Project.
