Eight Saker Falcon chicks hatched at the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre of Green Balkans are now flying free!

Jun 03, 2025

...
Just a few days ago, the youngest Saker Falcon chicks that hatched at the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre this year took off towards freedom.

The total number of Saker Falcons released into the wild this year is eight. The last three were moved into their temporary home in the past days, while the first chicks released via the adaptation aviaries are already flying freely.

This year marks a record for the most satellite transmitters deployed on Sakers released in Bulgaria - four in total. Two of these were donated to our efforts to restore the species in Bulgaria by the team of Life for Falcons project, in which Green Balkans is a partner. A project representative came in person to install the devices.

Thanks to the transmitters, our team will be able to track the falcons’ lives, and we will have valuable information about preferred foraging sites, wandering patterns, and hopefully, future nesting sites. They can also reveal threats - the transmitters will quickly and easily alert us if a bird is in danger.

For now, the Green Balkans team continues to care closely for the young birds - both those still in the adaptation aviaries and those already flying in the release area.

We once again thank the veterinary medicine students from Trakia University, as well as the students from the National High School of Veterinary Medicine "Ivan Pavlov", who actively supported our team in these activities.
